Cenobites are a fictional species from the Hellraiser species. If you know the character Pinhead from slasher media, he's the cenobite also known as the Hell Priest.

In their source media, cenobites are described as both "explorers in the further realm of sensation" and "angels to some, demons to others". They can be summoned by a puzzle box that, when solved, results in the opener being taken to the world the cenobites live and either ritually mutilated and turned into a cenobite themself, or else deemed unworthy and tortured in the cenobites' labyrinth.

The cenobites consider what they do to be a religious calling, and their god is Leviathan, who lives in the labyrinth to which the cenobites return. Given their aesthetics and the fact that the cenobites equate pain with pleasure, it is very easy to view them as a supernatural metaphor for BDSM.

While it's easy to portray the cenobites as demons or monsters, it's relevant to understand that everything they do, they do with some kind of consent. Everyone who opens the puzzle box knows, or at least is supposed to know, what they are getting into, and you are not supposed to seek the puzzle box or the cenobites unless you are absolutely sure about it.

While we don't have any cenobite extranths that we are aware of (at present), we have a good number of cenobite otherkin.

Cenobites are similar to concubi to us in that kink headmates tend to relate to them, but the cenobites' connection to kink that is not sexual is more canonical and overt, as well as more related to extreme and violent kinks.

Sometimes, someone in the system will have a cenobite kintype as well as an angel, demon, or incubus kintype, depending on which of those things they see cenobites as being more like to them.
